As an honor to a nation that is always at war, this chapter will be a tribute to the forefathers and the military tacticians for their victory against overwhelming enemies who are equipped with more modern weapons to engage in warfare against a lesser foe that is honorable of the fighting instinct.

As respect and tribute to David Ben Gurion (1886-1973) who is also the first Israeli Prime Minister who persevered to establish the Knesset with the declaration of an independent state of Israel in 1948 at the 1st state assembly of Israel.

Before the 1948 Independence War, on November 1947 UN Partition Plan was proposed for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine which was rejected by the Arabs but the Jewish community accepted this as the 1947 UN Partition Plan clearly outlines a permanent boundary line delineating both the territorial rights of Arabian and Israelite lands.
-
By March 1948 however, in an effort to protect US trade interest, the US renege the conditions of the former proposal by seeking a temporary UN approved trusteeship instead of an immediate partition previously proposed but the Jewish leadership rejected it seeing as such approvals can be revoked unconditionally thereby would put the creation of the whole state of Israel in jeopardy.
-
Subsequently the Arab states invaded Palestine when the declaration of the State of Israel was announced on May the 14th of 1948 followed by the withdrawal of British Forces from the territory following an Arab invasion on Israel territory.
-
UN Secretary General Trygve Lie called this an illegal aggression while Arabs states proclaimed United State of Palestine in place of Israel giving Arabs the right to launch territorial invasion. Official UN estimation of 711,000 Arab refugees resulted from the fighting remained unspecified due to unequal UN consensus of the population of Arabs and Arab population in that area at the time of war. Total Arab population:1,237,000 Jews:608,000 signifying more than half the Arab population is made refugees as a result of the 1948 Independence War is absurd.
-

The declaration of independence from the Arab states came not without cost but at the price of gaining victory at the Independence War 1947-1948 against an Arab League of several Arab countries made up of Arab Palestinian force, Arab Liberation Army, Transjordan, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Yemen with prewar WWII weapons against Israel that has very little or no military assistance from any western countries due to the monopolizing of oil reserves by the Arabs.
-
Whereby for every 3 Israelite troop, only one will be armed, with orders to grab the weapons of their fallen comrades or enemy soldiers to continue on fighting for the independence where patriotic pride is high among fighting people with a purpose non other than to have a country of their own.
-
(3 paragraphs added on 26-10-2007)
After the War of Independence, under UN mediation the Arabs insisted that Israel belongs to Arab lands which the Jews vehemently asserted that the borders of Israel was established as a result of war where the Jews was able to resist the onslaught of the Arabic invasion from the boundaries stated in the original 1947 UN Partition Plan.

-

The 2nd Arab insistence was that the Palestinian refugees resulting in the 1948 Independence War reserve the full right to should return to Israel was rejected by the assertion of Israel that the Palestinians is not only hostile to the Jewish state but that they would also fundamentally alter the Jewish character of the state. It was because of the refusal of Arabs to accept the formation of the 1947 UN Partition Plan that led to wars and conflicts fought and never won because of the fighting instincts of A Nation always at War.

With the declaration of independence, Ben Gurion was only formally consecrated as the 1st Prime Minister of Israel in Mac 1949 to Dec 1952. During his tenure he was deeply involved in planning for the evacuation of Jews scattered to the four corners of the earth in Operation Magic Carpet. Besides diplomatic passage for the Jewish immigrants where countless envoys and meetings have to be attended, planning and building of residential areas with the required amenities was of surmountable task with the mountainous influx of oversea immigrants. This is especially so as there were no city planners at the early stage of independence which is of utmost importance.

Left Picture of leaky transport ship though it was the laughing stock of the world yet became the symbol of the struggles of Israelite immigration during the British amnesty.

Where PM Ben Gurion used every available transport to transfer Jewish refugees even to the last option of purchasing a condemned heavily leaking transport ship before the penultimate where the immigration amnesty provided by the British authorities expired in the dying minutes of the temporal freedom.

The unexpected mountainous influx of refugees that has responded to the call to return to Israel has over exceeded the residential quota that was built, thereby require another insurmountable task of demolishing areas and building residential places fit for living.

Apart from that it was PM Ben Gurion who is the master architect and chief designer who instituted and established the flag of Israel that graced the strong winds of war in the coming years and beyond. The flag that was and is to mark the legacy of a nation that is always at war amongst the hostiles.
-
In 13th of December of the year 1949, because of the frequent incursions by armed Arab gangs that has increased the casualties of Israel. PM Ben Gurion seeing the need for an intelligence network that could provide classified information regarding any incursions, future events or matters of national interest, a highly secretive team made up of espionage agents not confined to any national, international rules or conditions was formed with a minister's directive only to report directly to the Prime Minister.

After David Ben Gurion served as Israeli Prime Minister for 4 consecutive terms, he stepped down so as to make way for Moshe Sharett who was hand picked by the Knesset committee. Not much is known of his accomplishments as there is no records of his administration of Israel which he is known to serve for the period of 1 and a half years from Jan 1954 to June 1955.

(Picture below) of PM David Ben Gurion that served another official 4 terms with another 2 terms unaccounted for)

Seeing that the country of Israel though established as a state in it's infancy, David Ben Gurion was once more put to the task of affirming state issues that must be addressed such as the supervision and planning of ongoing construction of residential areas, judicial, government, military, agriculture etc. at the time when Moshe Sherret took office. PM David Ben Gurion continued to served as the acting Israeli Prime Minister for officially another 4 consecutive terms and another 2 terms unaccounted for from October 1955 to November 1961 only to be involved in another international crisis.

1956 Suez Crisis (Added on 16-10-2007)
-
The decision made by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser to assert ownership of the Suez Canal as part of Egyptian territory was made in retaliation to the withdrawal of British and United States from the funding of the construction of the Aswan Dam which would require an estimated costs of 1.3 billion dollars. Even though the actual reasons why US and Britain pulled out of the agreement was because Egypt was secretly buying tanks and military from Czechoslovakia and China, Egyptian officials considered it a treacherous act to be punished in other ways.

What infuriated the Egyptians was that during the geographical and feasibility of the study in building the Aswan Dam that would take 12 years to complete, which was vital to Egyptian interest to divert humanitarian aid from Israel in the form of water, the British and United States showed strong interest in forming a partnership in funding for the project even though they knew of the russian military weapons purchase by Egypt only to turn down the offer at the last minute when all the feasibility study has completed.

The importance of the Suez Canal was vital to ensure quick delivery of any material needs up to the point of transporting much need military support at the quickest possible time. What must be emphasised here is that the Suez Canal offers the best and quickest shipping route that bypasses the usage of the African country, thereby bypassing the Cape of Africa which proved time consuming to western countries. It must also be noted that ships travelling the Cape of Africa route is prone to piracy as the hostile ships are quick in launching attacks and disperse by the vast African coastline in silence, thereby making enforcement efforts difficult and time consuming.
-

The importance of the Suez Canal was the very reason that Egypt
asserted the right over Suez Canal as Egyptian land, so as to recompense for the 'treachery on the episode of the Aswan Dam.'

And addition with 26th July 1956 announcement of the nationalization of Suez Canal, it gave the Egyptian naval the right to blockade the Israeli shipping routes in that area.

As the economy of nations most hurt by this fiasco happens to be British and french minorities that was trading heavily for Arab oil, Britain and French armies formed a tripartite with Israel's IDF and launched a number of military operations against the Egyptian forces with Israel leading the first wave of attack Operation Kadesh in the conquest of Sinai Peninsular on 29th of October1956 which was preluded with Operation Telescope by the allied army of the west during which time President Eisenhower presided the U.S. government.

This was the only allied war that involved the Israeli state where else the remaining Arab wars where a majority of Arab nations would group against the tiny nation that would fight it's wars independently as the international community would alienate Israel in most Arab conflicts.

On October 30th 1956 the western allied army launched Operation Musketeer with a coordinated successful assault on Egyptian positions which forced the Russian president Nikita Khrushchev to publicly intervene with all russian made military weapons.

Picture of Egyptian troops at the Suez Canal

With the nearing of Russian intervention in the 1956 Suez Crisis, the western allies under severe pressure was forced to pull out of the Suez Canal and thus the British Prime Minister Eden was forced to declare a cease fire in 9th of November 1956 and resigned on the same date.

Completion of the withdrawal of western forces from Egypt was only completed on 12th of November 1956 only to be replaced by UNEF United Nations Peace Keeping Force to police the territory of Suez Canal making it the sole right of the international community.

During his tenure as the 4th Prime Minister of Israel (June 1963 - Feb 1969), with the vast number of Jewish immigrants in Israel from the 4 corners of the earth, the demand for amenities led to dwindling resources. It is this time that Levi Eshkol established Mekorot Water Company to overcome the low pressure taps. The Yarkov to Negev projects linking to Lake Tiberias would also be used for irrigation of agriculture purpose to feed the vast people.

Levi Eshkol(1895-1969)

Picture of Levi Eshkol on left during the early years in office taken from the archives of Israel

Knowing that oil influence of the western world was particularly a mitigating factor in building an international relations, PM Levi Eshkol went deeply into oil exploration and drilling oil fields to draw the much needed commodity.

Then there were endless conflicts between the Arab population in Israel and the Jews themselves which must be addressed as it was still in the period of emergency. It was during Levi Eshkol's tenure where the 1967, 6 Day War broke out when Moshe Dayan was the Defense Minister though known for his brave reckless behavior that caused fear amongst Israel's neighbours.

-

The 1967 War is between Egypt, Syria and Jordan equipped with Soviet military pieces supplied through neighbouring Arab countries where Iraq played the biggest role. Where else Israel was alienated from British and US help, who even made matters worst by imposing an arms embargo on the tiny state of Israel.

Though General Dado Elazar was the central tactician entrusted in formulating tactical defensive/offensive manouvers and wrought victories. Yet towards the end of the war, Moshe Dayan together with General Ariel Sharon at the time, formulated tactical strategies to wrest the whole of Jerusalem back to Israel with a daring military incursion.

Picture of PM Levi Eshkol that surfaced due to the maturity and commitment of his work while still in office.

It was because of the sacrifices of PM Levi Eshkol and their predecessors to put the administration of internal matters on a firm foundation that the foothold of the advancement of Israel can be found because of their work. The intense administrative tension took its toll on PM Levi Eshkol in so much that he aged dramatically after serving for 6 terms as Prime Minister of Israel.
